- The Kittner Distinguished Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology of North Carolina University.
- Author of 263 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Glaucoma.
- Editor of the Glaucoma issue of Current Opinions in Ophthalmology and serves as editorial reviewer of a number of medical journals.
- Investigator of the Tema Eye Survey that examined more than 5,600 participants and measured our blindness burden and glaucoma categories for the first time at the population level. (Figures from th de studies strongly correlate with the recent Ghana Blindness and Visual Impairment surveys as well as others done in the past)
- Dr. Budenz has led a number of medical missions and research in Ghana, dating back many years.
