Training Requirements

Residency Training

The basic requirement for entry into residency training for all residency training programmes is a PASS in the Ghana College of Physicians & Surgeons Primary Examination. Applicants to the residency Programmes must have a recognized medical or dental qualification. The applicant should be fully registered and would have completed a period of houseman-ship training and one year district rotation as required by the Ministry of Health, Ghana. All Faculties expect that their residents would have rotated through the major specialties of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics before starting the residency training programme. Applicants will attend a selection interview.

Membership

The Division of Surgeons offer a two-tier system.  After 3 years of successful training, a resident becomes eligible for Membership at the Ghana College of Surgeons.

Fellowship

The second tier of training also lasts 2-3 years and leads to the Fellowship. It includes continuing clinical training with a research component. The research could be developed into a dissertation or thesis for an academic degree.  The clinical training for the Fellowship will be in sub-specialties.
